Host a Quilt Day

LEARN QUILT HISTORY and VIEW ANTIQUE QUILTS. Host a Kentucky Quilt Registry - IN YOUR COUNTY!

Holding a quilt registry in your area is not at all difficult - it can even be fun! Participating in a Quilt Registry will provide you and other volunteers with the opportunity to learn some valuable information about dating quilts, quilt care, quilt history, and quilt lore. Besides that, you will have a day in which you can view historic textile art up close! You will also get to visit with quilt owners and hear their stories. Finally, you will be providing a valuable service in the preservation of quilt history within the Commonwealth.

A quilt guild, a homemakers club, a group of interested volunteers, or some combination thereof can host a Quilt Registry. (Even non-quilting friends and husbands have been known to get into the act!)

To hold a Quilt Registry, the first thing you should do is contactSandy Stark, KHQS Museum and Archives Chairperson, to set up a date. Sandy will then supply you with needed information regarding a suitable location, publicity, volunteers, and a training session for the volunteers.

The afternoon or evening before the Registry, Sady will train the volunteers. On the day of the Registry, you, your volunteers, and Sandy will register quilts that people from your area have brought to the Registry site. Each quilt will be photographed, its history will be recorded, and a physical analysis of each quilt will be made.

The quilt owners will take their quilts home that day - after the photography, physical analysis, and registration. The photographs and information obtained at the Registry will be stored in the Manuscripts Division of The Kentucky Building at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky, where it will be available for women's studies, quilt historians, genealogical research, etc. Information from your Quilt Registry may also eventually be added to the online KHQS Quilt Registry.
