A NEW CHALLENGE

You are Invited to: "CELEBRATE THE FEMININE"

Now here is a challenge for you….
Make a quilt that elicits feelings, images, or actual likenesses that honor the feminine.  Seeing a dear friend and family member struggle with breast cancer this last year, I was thinking, why not combine our love for making quilts with a  theme which can also bring awareness and perhaps, contributions for breast cancer research.

This challenge is meant to travel to venues where women’s issues are
featured.  We already have one exhibition in the making that would be our “unveiling” exhibit at Eastern Kentucky University for March 2009 for “Women’s “Her”story” month.

The featured quilt this month is “Bluegrass is more than Grass” made by Karry Green Crump, a member of KHQS and QAK.  This quilt was made as part of a Kentucky 6 challenge and is on display this month at Artspace in Berea, KY.

Marta Miranda, a KHQS member and Head of the Women’s Study Program at EKU,  is working with us on featuring such an exhibit.  Marta has offered to make arrangements for a gallery space, reception, and promotion of such an exhibit.

Contributions to the Susan B. Koman Foundation will be encouraged but there will be no fee to see the quilts.  Any money raised after mailing expense, would all go to the Susan B. Koman Foundation.

So, all we have to do is make the quilts.

The Rules

1.  Make a quilt that celebrates the feminine:
“Possible themes could be about motherhood, friendships (to name just a few ) and could be inspirational, whimsical, pictorial, representational, abstract, etc. Your quilt could depict or represent a woman who has guided you in some way.  It could be a family member, teacher, a role model.
It could be a portrait but does not have to be a portrait.  It could be a self portrait.  Ideas can blossom like flowers which are very feminine, or eggs, which are very feminine or what about your take on the “Mona Lisa”?  You see where I am going here.
Make a quilt that “calls your name” in what ever way you wish to work.
Try to make your piece as original as possible making sure that you add your own take if it is a classical pattern.

2.  The only rule is the quilt must measure 30inchesX 30 inches.
The reason for this are three:
- Ease in hanging and planning space
- Ease in travel as we hope these quilts will travel to many venues
- The size gives some continuity to the show (think about Women of Biblical Proportion as an example of all pieces the same size)

3.  Have quilts to Pat Jennings by Feb.1, 2009.  Include a write up about your quilt.  We all like to know the “story” which could be what inspired you to make the quilt, anything about the process, what message you hope to get across, etc.
(Where to mail will be provided later when I figure that out.)

4.  Sign a contract giving permission for your quilt/quilts may travel throughout 2008 and 2009 to venues that will promote, educate, and support research on behalf of breast cancer awareness.

5. Pat Jennings will chair this venture and will coordinate venues and seeing that quilts get from one place to another.
The Quilt Artists of  Kentucky are sponsoring this challenge but all KHQS members are invited to participate in this challenge.
Please feel free to email me at mpatjennings@aol.com.  I would also like to know if you are planning to make a quilt for this challenge so I can plan for space for the exhibit.
